Barzani does not believe in independence, PUK official tells Kurdpress
A member of the central Council of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) blamed Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani’s visit to Brussels, Belgium, and called it an attempt to cover his illegal presidency in the region not an attempt to declare independence as “he does not believe in the approach of the public and shut down the parliament.”

“I believe that the most important issue at this time is to solve the internal problems of the region and Masoud Barzani needed to visit Sulaimani [the second largest city in the region] not Europe. The problems and troubles and their solutions are in Erbil, Sulaimani, Dohuk, Halabja and Kirkuk not in Europe,” Atta Sarawi told Kurdpress about Barzani’s tour to Europe on Monday, July 10.

Commenting on Barzani’s statements that his tour to Europe is to win international support for the independence of the region, Sarawi stated that the travel is within his attempt to lid his illegal presidency. Most people of the region believe that Barzani does not believe in democracy as people elected their parliament deputies in an election but Barzani shut the parliament down.

He noted that Barzani is continuing to lead the region though his legal term as the president ended two years ago.

Sarawi added that the people of the region should decide over the referendum through unity and it is only possible through dialogue and negotiations with Arab neighbors in Iraq as achieving independence is not possible in Brussels, the U.S., Iran, Turkey and any other state.
