Barzani, German Defense Minister discuss Iraq developments on phone
Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani received a phone call from German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday to discuss the latest political and security developments in the region, including the crisis in Kirkuk.

Ursula von der Leyen was optimistic that the military tensions between the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Baghdad-backed Shi’ite militias of Hashd al-Shaabi did not expand and was soon brought under control.

She also welcomed the initiatives for resuming talks between Erbil and Baghdad in hopes of finding a peaceful solution to their disputes.

The German minister once again commended the role of Peshmerga forces in the significant achievements made against Islamic State (IS), reiterating her country’s support for Erbil.
